About the painting:
This was made for a scientist to use in her talks and presentations about the speices.
These butterflies are an endangered Pine Rockland species that hosts on Pineland Croton. The larva prefer to eat the soft new growth of the plant, which happens in the aftermath of a fire in the landscape. Fire and/or mechanical clearing removes the overgrowth which would otherwise shade out tiny herbaceous plants like Pineland Croton. There are so few remaining tracts of Pine Rocklands in Miami that endemic tiny plant and animal species, like this one, are endangered as a result. Fortunately, efforts to protect and restore this habitat have been building in popularity over the years. This plant can also now be purchased through local native plant nurseries!
